Marie Anne Benoist dit Livernois (1665-1697) & Jean Bourbon (c.1653-1690)

This document details the lives and family of Marie Anne Benoist, a native-born settler who was killed by the Iroquois, and her first husband, Jean Bourbon, an immigrant who met the same fate.

Marie Anne Benoist dit Livernois (1665-1697)

Origins and Early Life

Marie Anne Benoist was the daughter of the pioneer couple Paul Benoist (dit Livernois) and Elisabeth Gobinet.[^1]

Marriages

  1. First Marriage (Jean Bourbon): On February 27, 1680, at the age of 15, Marie Anne Benoist married Jean Bourbon (aged 27) in Boucherville, New France. They had four children.[^3][^4]
    • 1681 Census (Prairie de la Magdelaine): Jean Bourbon (28) and Marie Benoist (16) are recorded with 1 gun, 3 cows, and 5 arpents under cultivation.[^5]
  2. Second Marriage (Jean Besset): After Jean Bourbon's death, Marie Anne, now a widow, remarried Jean Besset on May 16, 1695, in La Prairie (La-Nativité-de-la-Ste-Vierge). They had one child who died in infancy.[^6][^7]

Death

Marie Benoist dit Livernois was killed by the Iroquois and was buried in the cemetery of La Prairie on August 9, 1697.[^9]


Jean Bourbon (c.1653-1690)

Origins and Immigration

Jean Bourbon was the son of Jean Bourbon and Antoinette Poivre. He was born around 1653 in the parish of St-Étienne in Issoire, Auvergne, France. He had immigrated to New France by 1673.[^10]

Death

Jean Bourbon was killed by the Iroquois on September 4, 1690, during the attack on La Fourche de la Prairie de la Madeleine. His remains were buried in La Prairie on December 3, 1690.[^11]

From the marriage of Marie Anne Benoist and Jean Bourbon (4 children)

They had four children, with three surviving to marry:

  1. Barbe Elisabeth Bourbon (b. ~1680, d. 1754): Married Pierre Brosseau on June 9, 1698.
  2. Marie Marguerite Bourbon (b. 1685): Married Francois Marie on January 26, 1705.
  3. Marie Anne Bourbon (1687-1687): Died in infancy at 9 months old.
  4. Marie Anne Bourbon (b. 1689): Married Pierre Sarault on December 9, 1717.

From the marriage of Marie Anne Benoist and Jean Besset (1 child)

  1. Marie Jeanne Besset (1696-1697): Died in infancy.[^8]
